A visit to the unique island group of Lofoten and the impressive North Cape is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many. This two-week round trip includes all that and more. Travel through three countries and experience the extraordinary nature and culture north of the Arctic circle.
Day 1: Tromsø
Lively Tromsø is also called the “Paris of the North,” as it is the world’s northernmost university city and unrivalled this far north for its many good restaurants, bars, shops and outdoor activities. We recommend you visit the famous Arctic Cathedral and the Polaria experience centre while here.
Day 2: Alta
Today you will travel to Alta via the beautiful Lyngenfjord. At Alta Museum you will find rock carvings that are over 6000 years old. The city’s impressive Northern Lights Cathedral is also worth a visit.
Days 3 & 4: Honningsvåg
After a nice breakfast, drive alongside the Porsangerfjord to the impressive 307-meter-high North Cape cliff. The view over the Arctic Sea is awe-inspiring, especially during the summer months when the midnight sun dominates the night sky. On Day 4 you have time to explore Honningsvåg and its surrounding nature.
Day 5: Karasjok
In Karasjok, take time to visit the Sapmi Museum and learn more about the rich culture of the indigenous Sami people of Lapland.
Days 6 & 7: Saariselkä
Today, you will cross the border from Norway to Finland. We recommend a stop at the holy lake of Inari on the way to Saariselkä. On your second day in Finland, a visit the National Park of Urho Kekkonen is worthwhile.
Day 8: Sirkka
The next nature-highlight of the trip is waiting for you at Pallas-Yllästunturi, one of Finland’s biggest national parks. Long summer nights are perfect for a walk on some of the 350 kilometers of hiking paths found here.
Days 9 & 10: Kiruna
Moving on from Finland to Sweden, the road will take you to Kiruna. Home to the world’s largest iron ore mine, Kiruna is currently getting extra attention, as much of the city must be relocated due to instability in the city’s foundation as a result of the mine’s steady operation for over a century.
Day 11: Narvik
After driving alongside the long Torneträsk Lake and passing Abisko National Park, you will arrive back in Norway. Overnight in the town of Narvik, beautifully set between two fjords.
Days 12 & 13: Svolvær
The final highlight of your round trip is awaits you today. Around 10,000 years ago, the last Ice Age carved out a landscape you will find nowhere else in the world: the Lofoten Wall. On your second day, visit the charming fishing villages with their characteristic houses, called ‘rorbuer’ in Norwegian. We also recommend a boat tour on the majestic Trollfjord.
Day 14: Tromsø/Departure
Before flying home, we recommend a tour with the Fjellheis. Complete your trip by enjoying the astonishing view out over Tromsø one last time.
Indian Summer & the Northern Lights
Most tourists travel to northern Norway during the summer months, but why not travel just a bit later? Lapland has much more to offer than the midnight sun. The most stunning season is early fall when all foliage turns bright red and orange – and with a bit of luck, you might already be able to see the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky.
The Ultimate Bucket-list Experience
For over 130 years, Hurtigruten’s ships have been sailing people, mail and goods between the coastal communities. Follow this original postal route along the Norwegian coast with a cruise aboard Hurtigruten or Havila. Extend your stay in the north by combining this classic Norwegian experience with two nights in the Hanseatic city of Bergen. Visit the charming Bryggen, learn more about the famous composer Edvard Grieg, and admire the view over Bergen from Fløyen.
