Island Hopping in Southern Sweden

Gotland and Öland, the two largest islands off the east coast of Sweden, are known for their relaxed atmosphere and unique natural setting which attract both Swedish and international leisure travellers every year. This tour covers some truly idyllic ground from Kalmar to Stockholm and is a solid bestseller!

Day 1: Växjö
The tour starts in Växjö in the Swedish province of Småland. In the informative “Smålands Museum,” various exhibits document the history and glass production of the region since the 16th century.

Day 2: Växjö/Kalmar
Today’s destination is the Swedish East Coast and the popular coastal town of Kalmar. Kalmar is a charming town also known as the “Gateway to Öland,” thanks to an approximately 6-km-long bridge. The renaissance castle, “Kalmar Slot,” the former medival center of the city, or “Gamla Stan,” and the beautiful cathedral are all worthy sights to see.

Day 3: Kalmar
From your springboard in Kalmar, explore the idyllic island of Öland. The island, which is 137 kilometres long and only 16 kilometres wide, captivates with breathtaking natural landscapes and historical relics, such as castle ruins from the Middle Ages.

Day 4: Kalmar/Visby
Drive along the beautiful coast of Oskarshamn to board the ferry to Visby on the island of Gotland. The picturesque medieval town has a unique city wall, small curved cobblestone streets and plenty of romantic stone and wooden houses. The cosy city center of Visby and its medieval city wall are featured on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Days 5 & 6: Visby & Gotland
Distances on Gotland are short, and with Visby as the starting point, most sights and attractions are within walking distance. The southern tip of the island, also called the “Sudret,” is truly captivating with rough cliffs and charming windmills.

Day 7: Visby/Stockholm
After 3 relaxing days on Gotland, return to the mainland with a ferry crossing to Nynäshamn. The journey continues through small idyllic towns scattered throughout the archipelago home to the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

Day 8: Stockholm
A walk through the extremely charming old town district of “Gamla Stan” and a visit to the world-famous Vasa Museum are must-sees while staying in Stockholm. Remember also to visit the impressive hall in the “Stadshuset” (City Hall), in which Nobel Prizes are annually awarded.

Day 9: Stockholm/Jönköping
Today’s travels to Jönköping take you by Mariefred, Örebro and along Lake Vättern to Jönköping. Stopovers tempt all along the way, first with the fairytale Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, then the small town of Gränna famous for its candy canes. A visit to one of the Göta Canal lock systems at Berg is also a highlight before arriving in Jönköping, home to the world’s only matchstick museum.

Day 10: Jönköping/Departure
Individual return journey home from Jönköping.
