Denmark consists of over 400 small islands, 72 of which are inhabited, each with their own unique characteristics. This tour takes you to some of the most idyllic and scenic ones in Denmark, offering memorable culinary experiences along the way. The large islands of Funen and Zealand make up a large part of Denmark’s geography, ground you will also cover on this journey. Short distances between destinations make for a leisurely trip with plenty of time to soak in the fairytale scenery and romantic idyll.
Day 1: Copenhagen
Arrive on Zealand – the first island of the trip. Discover Copenhagen’s countless sights, such as Rosenborg Castle, Christiansborg, the shopping street “Strøget,” or enjoy a beer in the iconic harbour, Nyhavn. In the evening, the twinkling lights of fairytale Tivoli Gardens create a magical atmosphere. Just outside the city, you will find Kronborg Castle, The Louisiana Art Muesum, The Experimentarium Science Museum and the deer park, “Dyrehaven.”
Day 2: Copenhagen/Møn/Falster
Head to the island of Møn, whose 7 km-long limestone wall with spectacular white chalk cliffs plunging into the deep blue sea are an absolute must-see. The interesting geocenter at Møns Klint takes its visitors on a virtual journey through time from the cretaceous period to modern times. North of Møn, you will find the small Danish town of Nyord – the only car free town in Denmark – as you make your way to the island of Falster. Keep a lookout for neighbouring island, Lolland, whose flat terrain has given it the nickname “The Pancake Island.”
Day 3: Falster/Svendborg/Fåborg
Enjoy the ferry crossing from Tårs to Spodbjerg, followed by a few relaxing hours on the island of Langeland. Langeland impresses with its Tranekær Castle, the oldest inhabited house in Denmark, which can also be toured. The Langeland fort was a manned naval fort until 1993, but is now a museum that features information about the Cold War. On the way to the Svendborg/Fåborg area, consider a stop at Strandlyst Orchard and its fruit-filled farm shop.
Day 4: Funen
Funen is often referred to as the ‘Garden Isle’ of Denmark and is a paradise for nature lovers and cycling enthusiasts – there are over 18 marked cycled routes on the island. It also boasts 123 manor houses and castles, of which fairytale Egeskov Castle with its enchanting gardens is the highlight. The island is also known for its focus on culinary experiences and the use of good and local ingredients. To explore the island’s specialties, stop by the Finka Farm Shop in Svendborg or the local Aqua Vitae distillery in Skårup, which produces delicious fruit brandy.
Day 5: Funen/Ærøskøbing
The journey continues by ferry to Ærøskøbing, an old fishing and trading town. The island of Ærø also boasts many culinary temptations. Delicious souvenirs like Øhavets Chokolade and Ø-bolcher can be bought in the local shops or in the Rise Brewery.
Day 6: Ærø
The island of Ærø is made to explore by bike. In the summer there are daily arrangements and activities on the island, and bike rentals are readily available.
Day 7: Ærø/Odense
Back on Funen, the next destination is Odense, the birthplace of famous fairytale poet, H.C. Andersen. This town enchants with its cobbled streets and a creek that meanders through its centre. On the H.C. Andersen Path, the city can also be discovered in the footsteps of the famous story writer. We also recommend a visit to the Danish Railway Museum, the open-air Funen Village or the cosy Odense Zoo.
Day 8: Odense/Copenhagen
On the way back to Zealand, a stop in one of Denmark’s oldest cities, Roskilde, is worthwhile. See the architecturally significant Roskilde Cathedral, where a long line of Danish kings and queens have been buried, and visit the Viking Ship Museum, which gives good insight into the real life of the Vikings.
Day 9: Copenhagen/Departure
Individual return journey from Copenhagen.
