Vibrant cities and impressive, varied landscapes await on this round-trip by sea and by the idyllic Norwegian Railway. Take in the colourful wooden houses in Bergen, the Royal Castle and Karl Johans Gate in Oslo, and the Gothic tower of the Nidaros Cathedral as you experience three of Norway’s largest cities – Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. Cross over into the Arctic Circle by train on the way to Bodø, before boarding one of the famous HURTIGRUTEN ships. Your ‘Fjord Norway’ adventure will be perfectly rounded off with an unforgettable boat trip retunring you to Bergen from Bodø.
Day 1: Bergen
One of Bergen’s most iconic sights is the row of colourful wooden houses set along its waterfront, Bryggen, framed by the mighty mountains in the background. Enjoy a trip on the funicular up Mount Floyen for a unique panoramic view over the city.
Day 2: Bergen/Oslo
Today’s journey will be one of the most breathtaking, as you travel by train and boat to Oslo via Flåm. Follow steep serpentine roads, gaze across the UNESCO-protected Nærøyfjord and Aurlandsfjord on a boat tour, and ride the world famous Flåm and Bergen Railways, experiencing some of the top train trips in the world.
Day 3: Oslo
Spend a free day in the capital of Norway. This friendly city offers a wide range of activities, for both sunny and rainy days. Stroll along the famous Karl Johans Gate and through the fantastic Vigeland Sculpture Park, or step inside the iconic Oslo Opera House with its dramatic glacier-like roof.
Day 4: Oslo/Trondheim
Next stop is Trondheim, Norway’s former capital in the far north. The railway line leads through the legendary Gudbrandsdal and past the magnificent Dovrefjell mountain range. With a little luck, you may be able to spot a herd of reindeer or musk ox along the way.
Day 5: Trondheim
A visit to the Nidaros Cathedral is a sightseeing must – the kings of Norway were crowned in this northernmost Gothic cathedral. Trondheim is now a popular university town, with almost 30,000 students lending the city a vibrant, energetic atmosphere.
Day 6: Trondheim/Bodø
As you travel from Trondheim to Bodø, you will cross the Arctic Circle by train. Take some time while in Bodø to explore this city that was largely destroyed during World War II.
Day 7: Bodø
The Arctic city of Bodø is characterised by its beautiful views of the mountains and the sea. We recommend a visit to the Norwegian Aviation Museum as well as a trip to the tidal stream, “Saltstraumen.” If in Bodø from early June to mid July, be sure to make time for an evening walk under the midnight sun.
Days 7-9: Bodø/Bergen
Enjoy the next two nights on board one of the famous Hurtigruten ships, sailing one of the most beautiful stretches of sea in the world. Harbours big and small welcome you as you sail past small islands with idyllic lighthouses and through pretty fjords on your return journey to Bergen.
Day 9: Bergen/Departure
Individual return journey from Bergen.
