Adventures, Legends and Vikings

They have devastated and looted, raided far and wide. Once feared across Europe, we are now fascinated by this warlike population: The Vikings. Their lives and combative ways have been profiled in countless books, films, and series – an increasingly popular subject.

Follow in their footsteps with this tour that starts in Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, then proceeds to the middle of Jutland, where one of the most significant monuments of the Viking Age, the Jelling Stone, can be found. Denmark’s second largest city, Aarhus, and former Viking stronghold, Roskilde, also play a part in telling the story of Denmark’s exciting past.

Day 1: Ribe
Ribe datesback to 8th century, when it was the perfect starting points for raids. It has developed from a small village with a central market square to a cosy and charming Danish town that today captivates with its original cobbled streets and majestic cathedral.

Day 2: Ribe or Islands
Immerse yourself in Ribe’s Viking past for a day: bake your own flatbread, mint a Ripa silver coin, or participate in warrior training like a true Viking – all of this is possible here! Alternatively, consider a day trip to tiny Mandø island or larger, beach-bedecked Rømø.

Day 3: Ribe/Jelling/Aarhus
On your way to the European Cultural Capital of 2017, Aarhus, plan to stop in Jelling for a view of the famous Jelling Stone. This ancient rune stone tells the story of Harald Bluetooth, who distanced himself from the Nordic Gods and instead joined the Christian faith. Considered the “birth certificate” of Denmark, this is an absolute must for every Viking fan!

Day 4: Aarhus
Aarhus is home to the reknowned Moesgaard Museum, with its ever-changing exhibitions, wealth of Viking artifacts and plenty of opportunities to learn more about their life and times. The museum is host to “Viking Days” every year, attracting fans of this cultural identity from all over the world. Aarhus also features a fascinating open-air museum, “Den Gamle By,” as well as the famous AroS art museum.

Day 5: Aarhus/Trelleborg/Roskilde
Spend a little bit of time enjoying downtown Aarhus with a stroll through the stylish Latin Quarter district or along the modern harbour front before hopping the ferry to Zealand. Be sure to stop in Slagelse to visit the Viking Castle “Trelleborg” built around 981 before continuing on to Roskilde.

Day 6: Roskilde
On the last day of this tour dedicated to Danish heritage, we recommend visiting Roskilde’s Viking Ship Museum, appropriately set on the Roskilde fjord. Experience a unique 2-hour journey on a reconstructed Viking wooden ship as part of your visit. Round out your time in Denmark by paying respect to the long line of Danish monarchs buried at Roskilde’s important cathedral.
